Why now

Enforcement started. This is no longer a future deadline.

The EAA has been enforceable since June 28, 2025. Through 2026, national regulators and courts moved from guidance to action:

Germany · 2025–26

Warning-letter wave

Law firms began issuing formal warning letters (Abmahnungen) to online shops within weeks of the law taking effect. Responding to one costs €1,000–3,000 in legal fees — before you fix anything.

France · 2026

Court-ordered compliance

A French court ordered Carrefour to make its site fully accessible within six months or face daily fines — ruling that partial accessibility is not sufficient.

Sweden & Netherlands · 2026

Regulators opening cases

Sweden has 124 public complaints under review, most against e-commerce sites. The Netherlands moved to mandatory reporting, with formal enforcement expected late 2026.

The uncomfortable truth

An accessibility widget won't save you

Overlay widgets change how your store looks — not the code underneath that screen readers, keyboard users, and regulators actually see. That's why stores running widgets still receive complaints and lawsuits.

The largest accessibility-widget vendor was sanctioned by the US FTC in 2025 for deceptive claims about what its AI could fix. One merchant paying $1,300/year for a widget reported being sued anyway — their lawyer's verdict: “the widget attracts more lawsuits.”

2 · Fix with plain-language guides

Every issue explained: what it is, who it blocks, which WCAG criterion it fails, and the exact change to make in your theme editor. Prioritized so you fix the critical 20% first.

3 · Stay compliant automatically

Your accessibility statement, generated. Weekly re-scans that catch regressions when your theme or apps change. A PDF report you can hand to any lawyer, customer, or regulator.

FAQ

Questions merchants ask us

Does the EAA even apply to my store?

It applies if you sell to EU consumers and have 10 or more employees or €2M+ annual turnover. Smaller than that? You're formally exempt as a service provider — but marketplaces, B2B buyers, and payment partners increasingly require accessibility anyway, and warning letters don't check your headcount before arriving. Our free scan includes an applicability check.

Is this legal advice?

No. EAAReady is a technical audit against WCAG 2.1 AA / EN 301 549 — the standards the EAA references — plus the documentation the law requires. For legal questions about your specific situation, talk to a lawyer (and hand them our PDF report; it will save you billable hours).

Will this slow down my store?

No. Unlike overlay widgets, EAAReady injects nothing into your storefront. We scan from outside, exactly like a visitor's browser would. Zero runtime code, zero performance impact, zero new scripts for you to worry about.

I already have an accessibility widget. Am I covered?

Almost certainly not — and you may be at higher risk. Overlays modify presentation, not your underlying code, and courts have made clear that partial fixes don't satisfy the EAA. Run the free scan with your widget active and see what it misses. That scan is free precisely because this conversation usually ends the widget subscription.

Can't Shopify just fix this for me?

Shopify's newest themes are better than ever on accessibility — but your content (product image alt text, banner contrast, custom sections, third-party app embeds) is yours, and that's where most failures live. The platform can't write your alt text or fix the contrast on the hero banner you designed.

When do I get access?
